What is an artist loft?
- The artist lofts are 50 apartment homes set aside specifically for the artist/creative community. Features include high ceilings, unencumbered space, durable surfaces. These residents will have access to gallery space they can program, makers lab space, classroom space, artist co-op space, and art studios for commercial lease.
Do you have to be an artist to live in ArtistSpace Lofts?
- Anyone may apply for for affordable housing in the Petersburg ArtistSpace Lofts development, but 50 of the 226 apartment homes are set aside for occupancy by applicants who participate in and are committed to the arts and creative fields.
Does your income have to come from your art in order to live in a designated artist loft?
- No, applicants do not need to derive their income from their art. It is not uncommon for artists to work in another field to support themselves and their art form.
What art/creative fields are considered an artist?
- Fine Arts: Including but not limited to painting, drawing, sculpture, book art, mixed-media and print-making.
- Imaginative Arts: Including but not limited to film, video, digital media, literature, costume design, photography, architecture, music composition, songwriting.
- Functional Arts: Including but not limited to jewelry, rugs, decorative screens, furniture, pottery, toys, quilts, crafts, ceramics.
- Performing Arts: Including but not limited to singers, musicians, dancers, actors, and performance artists, and those behind the scenes in these fields.
- Culturally Significant Arts: Including a designer, technician, tattoo artist, hairdresser, chef/culinary artist, craftsperson, journalist, teacher or administrator who is dedicated to using their expertise within the community to support, promote, present, and/or teach and propagate their art form through events, activities, performances, and classes.
Are all art forms allowed in ArtistSpace Lofts?
- Artistic processes that are extremely noisy, do not comply with local zoning regulations or involve hazardous materials are typically not allowed to be practiced in your apartment home. All uses must comply with applicable code. For example, welding, woodworking using power tools, amplified band practice or glass blowing would not be allowed.
